I can remember the old Co-op building in High Street quite well.
Dating back to c.1916, the shop was full of character. The thing
that sticks in my mind the most was the vacuum pipes that used to
transfer paperwork and possibly money around. It seems that the
store was extended in the 1960's. It was also joined up with a
new store that was part of the Big Top site (see 31) and you could walk
from the old to the new via underground passages. The Co-op was
demolished to make way to the Pavilions Shopping Centre at the tail end
of the 1980's.
Co-op extensions are the brick
buildings. Picture c.
