The King Returns!
At the tail end of 2010, I noticed some work going on outside
Baskerville House and I wondered what could be happening. Then, a
few weeks later, out of nowhere an impressive statue had
appeared! Thankfully, a story in the Birmingham Mail Extra
cleared up the mystery and what a fascinating story it was...
The statue of King Edward VII was made by local sculptor Albert Toft
way back in 1913. It was paid for by donations by Mail readers
and originally lived in Victoria Square. In 1951, as the city's
redevelopment frenzy got underway, it was moved to Highgate Park where
it suffered neglect and vandalism. To see it back in the heart of
the city is something that I'm sure many people will appreciate.
